UNEP is one of the three founding agencies of the UN-REDD Programme. Within the UN-REDD Programme, UNEP is the lead agency on Global Programme Work Areas 5 and 6, Multiple Benefits and Green Economy respectively. UNEP also contributed to work areas led by FAO and UNDP and in the coordination and delivery of National Programmes.

REDD+ holds the promise of multiple benefits for climate, development and conservation in the forest sector at national and global levels. The UN-REDD Programme supports countries to realize these benefits from forests and REDD+ through support to their national REDD+ programmes and targeted support.

As part of the Multiple Benefits Work Area, the UN-REDD Programme supports countries in their efforts to integrate multiple benefits into their REDD+ strategies and development plans. The UN-REDD Programme is also working with partners and REDD+ countries to develop tools and guidance to enhance the multiple benefits of REDD+ and reduce risks from inadequate planning and implementation. As part of this work, a set of Social and Environmental Principles and Criteria have been developed.

UNEP, as part of the UN-REDD Programme, is working with countries to demonstrate the potential for REDD+ to be a catalyst for green economy transformation of the forest sector. In order to capitalize on all of the potential of REDD+, investment plans need to be structured to take into account multiple ecosystem services and cross-sector planning. The long-term goals of this work area are to:

  1. Enable UN-REDD Programme partner countries to take advantage of REDD+ as an opportunity to locate context-relevant development solutions in real landscapes that pass the 'test' of satisfying cross-sections of stakeholders and promote growth and equitable development
  2. Create opportunities for partner countries to deliver equitable development under constraints of green house gas mitigation and conservation
