Partners Announcements

Since 2013, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been collaborating closely with the Virtual Center of Excellence on Forest Monitoring (CEVMF) to reinforce South-South Cooperation in forest monitoring. This partnership operates within the framework of the Mesoamerican Strategy for Environmental Sustainability that aims to deepen and diversify existing regional cooperation in environmental matters in the context of the growing economic, political and social connection between ten countries of the Mesoamerican region.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has engaged on a dynamic process to program the first tranche of the REDD+ funds received from the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) to implement reforms and actions on the ground as delineated in the country's REDD+ investment plan. To that end, the Technical Commitee of the DRC National REDD+ Fund has met four times to date to examine submissions received following calls for proposals, and make recommendations to the Steering Committe led by the DRC Ministry of Finance. New pages dedicated to DRC on the CAFI website (in both French and English), describe the background, process and funding decisions to date.

With support from the UN-REDD Viet Nam Phase II Programme, the Viet Nam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development organized a High-level Dialogue on REDD+ in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, on 18 November 2016. High-level officials discussed the country’s perspective and commitment. The event mixed representatives from several Government agencies, leading REDD+ countries and international partners to allow a broad-based dialogue.

The third UNFCCC voluntary meeting on the coordination of support for the implementation of REDD+ activities takes place on Monday 23 May 2016 in Bonn, Germany. On this occasion CAFI, the Central Africa Forest Initiative, will be presented as one of the models of coordinated support. The short intervention highlights CAFI's objectives, its complementarity with other initiatives and achievements to date.

A new web-based tool, launched in Liberia's capital Wednesday, shows how protecting great apes in Africa and Asia can help countries fight climate change. The online app superimposes maps of great ape ranges and of forest carbon stocks, allowing policymakers to better identify conservation priority areas.

The tool was launched by the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) and the United Nations Collaborative Programme for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD Programme).

Six African nations have agreed with donors on a plan to protect the tropical forests of the Congo basin, the second biggest in the world after the Amazon's, to help ease poverty and combat climate change -- with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Anti-corruption investigators and forestry law enforcement officials from across Southeast Asia gathered in Malaysia on June 1-5 to strengthen collaboration and investigative skills to more effectively fight corruption in the forestry sector. In particular, Indonesia presented preliminary findings from an evaluation of its multi-door approach to combat forest crimes, currently supported by the UN-REDD Programme.

The guide includes resources from key REDD+ technical information sources including the UN-REDD Programme and its collaborating UN agencies (FAO, UNDP and UNEP), Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, and others.

UNEP and IUCN are currently conducting a global survey of over 1,000 companies to explore corporate interest in financing forest restoration. The survey is carried out by the Brussels-based NGO WeForest, and results will be presented at the Bonn Challenge meeting on 20/21 March in Bonn/Germany. The Bonn Challenge is looking at an innovative way to support Corporate Partners that would like to restore degraded forests and landscapes. Increasingly, the corporate sector is engaging with the challenge of climate change through innovative ways to support communities in areas that their value chain touches. The concept of the Bonn Corporate Challenge is to explore matching Corporate donations to reforestation with public funds.
