A  South-South study tour in Dehradun, India, served to increase participants' understanding of the National Forest Inventory (NFI) methodologies and practices used by the Forest Survey of India (FSI).

Four participants from the Sri Lanka Forest Department and two participants from Sri Lanka's Wildlife Conservation Department participated in this knowledge sharing initiative, which focused on building institutional and technical arrangements for NFI in Sri Lanka through sharing lessons from Indian NFI practices.


Major outcomes of the initiative included:

  • Enhanced technical knowledge on NFI
  • Increased understanding of the importance of identifying appropriate NFI parameters, taking ecological benefits into account
  • Increased understanding of ground-based practices followed during NFI
  • Assessment of skilled human resources and tentative budgets required for NFI
  • Institutional arrangements for NFI
