The final report on "Mapping potential biodiversity benefits from REDD+: The Democratic Republic of the Congo" was launched in Kinshasa last week. This is a collaborative piece of work between DIAF, OSFAC and UNEP-WCMC with support from the UN-REDD Programme. The reports are available in French and English . Read more.

UN-REDD/FAO has recently presented a new DRC 'National Forest Monitoring System for REDD+' at the COP 17 in Durban. This system was guided by the DRC Government and created by FAO in order to provide support to the REDD+ process for the DRC for capacity building, knowledge transfer and by means of the development of a DRC REDD+ wall-to-wall National Forest Monitoring System based on satellite data. Read more.

DRC's 2035 Scenario workshop took place 15-18 November in Kinshasa with the objective of exploring four different scenarios of long term development in DRC. Approximately 100 people participated, including the Coordinator of the national study 'Congo Vision 2035', anchored at the Ministry of Planning. An important outcome of this workshop was the possibility to integrate the REDD+ prospective analysis into the national 'Congo Vision 2035' process. Read more.

The High Level Forum on Forests and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in DRC has just concluded in Kinshasa on 10 -11 October. A notable success, it has gathered over 300 participants, including a number of national and international officials such as the DRC Ministers for Environment, planning, Energy and High level Education, the minister of Environment of the Republic of Congo, UNEP's Executive Director, the Climate Ambassador of Norway and the UN-REDD Head of Secretariat. Francais

The Democratic Republic of Congo has entrusted a Canadian company with managing a vast section of its forest, including containing deforestration, the environment ministry has announced.The project is part of the country's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (REDD+) programme. A workshop to examine the first draft of the national social and environmental standards for REDD+ in DRC is organized 18-21 July in Kinshasa. The objectives of the workshop are to 1) examine the relevance of the drat standards (principles, criteria and indicators), 2) analyse whether they are sufficiently exhaustive 3) study their formulation and 4) propose options to implement these standards. The REDD+ National Coordination is recruiting a national consultant to serve as governance and anti-corruption adviser for REDD+. Deadline to apply is 24 July 2011. See more details (in French) and apply here

A 6 month social and environmental expert vacancy in DRC (English/ French) is open until 9 May. The expert will ensure a high level of coherence among the different ongoing efforts such as the strategic environmental and social assessment (SESA), the social and environmental standards that are being developed, the approval process for REDD+ projects and the development of the monitoring framework to ensure that these benefits and risks will be clearly and meaningfully incorporated into the national REDD+ strategy, and into a wider, transformative vision for the country.

UNDP's publication on anti-corruption and climate change (adaptation and REDD+) launched last November is now available in French. Download "Garder le Cap: Faire face aux risques de corruption dans le changement climatique".

 

The UN-REDD Programme participated in the FIP mission in DRC on February 21- 25. On 14-18 March, a mission to discuss anti-corruption programming for REDD+ also took place. Terms of reference and more details may be found DRC / Missions folder.
The National REDD Coordination (Coordination Nationale) in DRC is organizing a workshop on benefit distribution systems in Kinshasa on 26-28 January. See more details here
