Ecuador

UN-REDD will support the organization of two consultation workshops, in Lago Agrio (21August) and Quito (24August), to launch the Participatory Governance Assessment for REDD+ (PGA) in Ecuador. The workshops will bring together representatives of the government, of civil society and of indigenous peoples. More information on the workshops will be available shortly. The inception Workshop for the UN-REDD National Joint Programme (NJP) successfully took place on Thursday 12 July 2012, in Nueva Loja-Sucumbios.  The UNREDD NJP was introduced from a global and national perspective. The workshop featured guests such as the Governor of Sucumbios, Mayors from local governments, Presidents of Parish Councils, National and International NGOs, Communities and Indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian and Montubio Organizations. The diversity of the participants allowed interventions with a high level of debate and substantive contributions.

The Government of Ecuador and Conservation International are co-hosting the side event on 'Addressing REDD+ Social and Environmental Safeguards: Experiences Using REDD+ SES and Other Mechanisms'. The event will take place this Wednesday, 30 November. More details.

On 17 and 18 November, meetings between the Government of Ecuador (Ministry of Environment), UNDP Ecuador and the UN-REDD Programme will take place in Quito to further discuss the PGA for REDD+ approach and define the next steps to get the pilot initiated. More details.

After reviewing and addressing comments from the Policy Board and independent reviewers, Ecuador signed its National Programme Document on October 28 2011. Final signed document and response matrix to comments can be accessed here

A UN-REDD joint mission for the finalization of Ecuador's National Programme Document (NPD) took place 11 to 14 July, following the CBD workshop. 

The Undersecretary of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador is pleased to announce that its REDD+ webpage is now available in English.

El análisis de PNUD “Manteniendo el rumbo: El manejo de los riesgos de corrupción relativos al cambio climático” ahora está disponible en español. El análisis estudia los riesgos de corrupción de REDD+ y propone un marco para analizar y recomendar como mitigar esos riesgos durante las fases del diseño e implementación de REDD+.

On the occasion of its 6th meeting in March 2011 in Da Lat, Viet Nam, the UN-REDD Programme Policy Board approved a budget allocation of US $ 4 million for Ecuador's national UN-REDD Programme.

A delegation from Viet Nam, led by Vice-Minister for Forestry H.E. Hua Duc Nhi, is visiting Mexico and Ecuador from 5 to 13 April to learn from the Latin American experiences in community forestry, Payment for Environmental Services and financing mechanisms for the forestry sector. The visit will also serve to strengthen the ties between the three countries in REDD+ implementation and is one of the first practical exchanges of the emerging South-South collaboration on REDD+.
